MODERNIZATION

What does it means?

Full elevator modernization means updating the key parts of the elevator to improve safety, performance, reliability, energy efficiency and, often, aesthetics. Based on budget and client preference, it may or may not include updating the elevator cab interior. With a phased modernization, you can update critical elevator components over time, starting with the most urgent need first.

Each full modernization project is different based on the age and condition of the elevator’s key components. An elevator modernization generally involves replacing the following:

  • Controller – controls all elevator functions, the “brains” of the elevator

  • Fixtures – car operating panel, hall fixtures, buttons, lighting

  • Door equipment – door operator, roller guides, tracks, all of which enable smooth opening and closing (most elevator shutdowns are door related)

  • Elevator machine – the motor that drives the elevator

  • Suspension means – hoist cables for traction elevators or power unit (and sometimes jack/cylinder) for hydraulic elevators

  • Safety system – for example, sensors that monitor car speed (governor) and position, as well as infrared door protection

Sometimes elevators just need a face lift, called a cab renovation. A cab renovation may include upgrading the following:

  • Doors (either inside the cab, facing the hallway, or both)

  • Lighting

  • Call buttons

  • Cab flooring

  • Ceiling panels

  • Wall panels
